Throughout my childhood, Thanksgiving held a cherished tradition in our family. After the sumptuous feast of turkey, stuffing, green bean casserole, and sweet potatoes crowned with gooey marshmallows, we would all gather around the table. Holding hands, just before the prayer, my father would invite each of us to express something we were thankful for.
In light of this tradition, there's a special place for the Book of Psalms in our family's Thanksgiving celebrations. Psalms, with their rich expressions of gratitude and praise, have become a cornerstone of our Thanksgiving Day gatherings. Just as we gather to express our thanks for the blessings of the year, the Psalms guide us in offering our gratitude to a higher power, fostering a sense of togetherness and spiritual connection among family members. It's a tradition that continues to bring warmth and meaning to our Thanksgiving celebrations, reminding us of the importance of gratitude and faith, not just on this special day but throughout the year.
As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?
My tears have been my food day and night, while people say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”
These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go to the house of God under the protection of the Mighty Onewith shouts of joy and praise among the festive throng.
Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.
My soul is downcast within me; therefore I will remember you from the land of the Jordan, the heights of Hermon—from Mount Mizar.
Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me.
By day the LORD directs his love, at night his song is with me— a prayer to the God of my life.
I say to God my Rock, “Why have you forgotten me? Why must I go about mourning, oppressed by the enemy?”
My bones suffer mortal agony as my foes taunt me, saying to me all day long, “Where is your God?”
Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.
The LORD is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid?
When the wicked advance against me to devour me, it is my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall.
Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then I will be confident.
One thing I ask from the LORD, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple.
I will exalt you, my God the King; I will praise your name for ever and ever.
Every day I will praise you and extol your name for ever and ever.
Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom.
One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts.
They speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty— and I will meditate on your wonderful works.
They tell of the power of your awesome works— and I will proclaim your great deeds.
They celebrate your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of your righteousness.
The LORD is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love.
The LORD is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made.
All your works praise you, LORD; your faithful people extol you.
They tell of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your might,
so that all people may know of your mighty acts and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.
Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures through all generations. The LORD is trustworthy in all he promises and faithful in all he does. (verse 1-13)
Psalm 106 - Give Thanks to the Lord, for He is Good
Praise the LORD. Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.
Who can proclaim the mighty acts of the LORD or fully declare his praise?
Blessed are those who act justly, who always do what is right.
Remember me, LORD, when you show favor to your people, come to my aid when you save them,
that I may enjoy the prosperity of your chosen ones, that I may share in the joy of your nation and join your inheritance in giving praise. (verses 1-5)
King David, who wrote many of the Psalms, understood the ebb and flow of life seasons. When you peruse the Psalms, you find some brimming with praise and thanksgiving and some bemoaning life and health and disloyal friends. But no matter the circumstance, most of David’s poems end with encouraging thoughts about God. That is why we turn to Psalms of Thanksgiving to recall God's goodness. And truly, no matter what you and I face today or find ourselves carrying into this holiday season, we can be encouraged as we ponder David’s words about the kind of God we have.
So whether you’re approaching this day with over-the-moon gratitude or a feeble attempt to drum up a droplet or two of thanks, may you find hope and encouragement as you think on the truth of our God. May these Psalms of thanks and praise remind you of the loving, sovereign God you serve.
