America’s Seeming Obsession With “Fairness”

Tuesday, February 20, 2024

So, the president (or at least the White House – we have no idea how decisions are made in this administration) has decided it is time for Israel to stop clearing Hamas out of Gaza.  Forty-five minutes into the show and the caller consensus seems to be that Biden has altered his position for the sake of his re-elect.  If that is indeed the case, and it certainly seems to be, it indicates that Biden’s base has bought into the Gaza/Hamas as victim narrative and that Israel’s far superior military capability makes this an “unfair” fight.  This obsession with “fairness” has grown and grown in our cultural ethos as our concepts of equality have morphed from equal opportunities to equal outcomes.  It reflects an attitude of entitlement, and we see in this latest manifestation that it has completely morphed morality.  Rather than acts being good and evil, the only evil is now if someone has some perceived advantage over the other.

The Unashamed Shaming of the “Thoughts and Prayers” Taunts

Thursday, February 15, 2024

Well, it’s begun, as I predicted last night.  While the Chiefs quarterback leads prayer, a congressman denounces it.  Meanwhile, nobody seems to have the energy to decry a shooting at an actual church last weekend.  Last night I urged Christians to do as Christ did and redeem the mockery – forgiving the mockers.  But we have a problem, the mockers will only scorn our forgiveness for they are utterly unashamed.

Christianity In The Dock

As the news of the Kansas City shooting hit my eyeballs my first thought was “nobody publicly offer ‘thoughts and prayers.’”  It’s a formula now – mass shooting -> calls for gun control labelling anyone that dares to pray for the victims and their loved ones hypocritical.  But that is cynical on my part.  Insult is not argument and prayer works.

The Lesson of the Mutant Wolves

Wednesday, February 14, 2024

There has been much sensationalist coverage of the wolves of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone and their resistance to forming cancers.  I love the story mostly because of its resemblance to the great “B” monster movies of the post-war era, or the origin story of several superheroes like The Hulk or the Fantastic Four.  But if you read past the screaming headlines there is some interesting science there.  There are also some very deep lessons both scientifically and philosophically.

The Death of Excellence

Monday, February 12, 2024

OK, let’s try this from a different angle.  In 1983 Tom Peters and Robert Waterman published a massively influential management book entitled “In Search of Excellence: Lessons from America’s Best-Run Companies.”  To not read it was to not be taken seriously in management circles or aspiring to them. But note the premise, to study excellence to learn how to become excellent.  It was aspirational.  But one must wonder if such aspiration exists today?
