One of the greatest gifts we can give another person costs nothing. Our words. I’ve discovered that sometimes the right words, spoken at the right moment, can change the direction of someone’s entire day. Sometimes it even changes their life.
In 2000, I went on what I thought was a vacation with two of my writer friends, Anne and Cindy. They were both researching for books, but as we launched out on our vacation that would take us through six countries in seven days, my friend Anne looked at me and said, “God has a story in this for you too, Tricia.”
I laughed it off because my book ideas had already been rejected numerous times, and honestly, I was just wanting a vacation.
Yet those words stirred in me. What Anne was saying was, “I believe in you. I see you. You are a writer.” Her encouragement opened my eyes, and two things came from that trip.
First, I heard the story that would become my first novel, From Dust and Ashes.
Second, I fell in love with the Czech Republic. I started praying for the Czech Republic back in 2000, and 26 years later, I have led numerous mission trips there. Multiple churches have partnered with ministries in the Czech Republic. Our daughter, Leslie, has lived there for 13 years, is married to a Czech man, and they have two children. And now John and I are about to launch a nonprofit ministry to support church planting in the Czech Republic.
Anne’s few words of encouragement caused me to pause and consider what God could do, and He has done more than I ever imagined.
The Bible has a lot to say about encouragement because God knows we all need it. Today, consider how your words of encouragement can forever transform someone’s life … for God’s glory.
Our Words Have the Power to Build Up
The Bible has much to say about encouragement, but nothing clearer than this. Paul writes:
"Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing." —1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NIV)
As I mentioned before, encouragement isn’t optional for believers. It’s part of how we reflect Christ. Every day we cross paths with people who are carrying burdens we can’t see. A kind word can remind them they aren’t alone. When we take a moment to offer these grace-filled words, we become the hands and feet of Jesus to those who need it most.
I’ve Been on Both Sides
When I first started attending Christian writers conferences, I was full of excitement. I carried my book proposals and manuscripts, hoping editors would love my stories. Instead, they kindly pointed out everything that needed work.
Surprisingly, I wasn’t discouraged. Why? Because along with the corrections came encouragement. People saw potential. They believed I could grow. Their words weren’t, “You’re not good enough.” Their message was, “Keep going. You’re learning.” Those encouraging voices helped me persevere.
Years later, by God’s grace, I’ve written more than 100 books. Looking back, I realize that I didn’t need people who would simply praise me. I needed people who would tell me the truth with kindness and remind me that the journey was worth taking. That kind of support is transformative because it roots your growth in reality rather than just fleeting affirmation, providing the foundation needed to persevere.
Encouragement Gives Strength
A few years ago, I found myself struggling physically. I was exhausted. My health wasn’t where I wanted it to be, and I wondered if I would always feel that way. Then my friend Amber encouraged me to take one small step toward better health. That one conversation changed so much.
Over time, I lost ninety pounds, but the greatest gift wasn’t the number on the scale. It was having the energy to say yes to what God was calling me to do.
This transformation wasn’t just about physical health. It was also a profound reminder of God’s faithfulness in restoring us. When we allow others to speak life into our struggles, we gain the strength not only to endure but to thrive in the purposes He has prepared for us. It’s a beautiful cycle of receiving grace and then being empowered to extend that same hope to others.
For example, recently, I spent twelve hours at a writers conference in St. Louis, visiting with editors, encouraging other writers, and celebrating the stories God is writing through His people. As I stood there, I couldn’t help but thank God.
A few years earlier, I wouldn’t have had the energy for a day like that. Now I could serve others because someone first spoke hope into my life. Encouragement has a ripple effect. When someone’s encouragement strengthens us, we’re able to strengthen someone else.
Our Words Carry Life
Proverbs 18:21 says, "The tongue has the power of life and death."
Think about that for a moment. Every conversation gives us a choice. Will our words leave someone feeling heavier—or lighter? More fearful—or more hopeful? More ashamed—or more loved?
I’ve seen the difference a simple message can make. Sometimes I send a text telling someone I’m praying for them. Sometimes I celebrate a small victory with one of the women I guide as a health coach. Sometimes I remind a friend that God isn’t finished with their story. Those words may seem small, but they often arrive at exactly the right moment.
Speak Grace
Ephesians 4:29 tells us: "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen."
I love that phrase: according to their needs.
Encouragement isn’t about saying something clever. It’s about noticing people. It’s asking God, What does this person need to hear today?
Sometimes it’s as simple as:
- I’m praying for you.
- I believe in you.
- You’re doing better than you think.
- God isn’t finished with your story.
- Thank you for the way you love your family.
- I see how hard you’re trying.
Simple words. Extraordinary impact.
Jesus Modeled Encouragement
Jesus constantly noticed the people everyone else overlooked. He welcomed children. He spoke with the woman at the well. He restored Peter after his failure. He called ordinary fishermen to change the world.
Jesus looked beyond people’s failures and saw who they could become through God’s grace. Everywhere Jesus went, people left with hope because His words reflected the Father’s heart. When Jesus’ Spirit lives in us, our words can do the same.
Who Needs Encouragement Today?
Maybe it’s your spouse. Your child. A grieving friend. The cashier at the grocery store. Someone who keeps posting cheerful pictures online but quietly feels overwhelmed. Ask God to show you one person today.
I’ve learned that some of the most meaningful moments in my life haven’t come from grand gestures. They’ve come from someone taking just a minute to say, “I’m praying for you,” “I believe in you,” or “Don’t give up.” Those words stayed with me and gave me the courage to take the next step. Today, I want to be that kind of person for someone else. What about you?
A Prayer
Lord, thank You for every person who has encouraged me along the way. Thank You for the people who saw potential in me when I couldn’t always see it myself. Help me become that kind of person for others. Fill my heart so completely with Your love that encouragement naturally flows from my words. Let my conversations point people toward hope, truth, and Your goodness. Teach me to notice those who need a reminder that they are seen, loved, and never alone. May my words always reflect the heart of Jesus. In His precious name, amen.

Psalm 1-2: The Righteous vs. the Wicked
In Psalms 1 and 2, we see the contrast between the ways of the righteous and the ways of the ungodly. There is joy in following God’s law, delighting in it, and finding strength in Him. The psalmist compares the righteous to a strong tree bearing fruit, while the wicked are like chaff, scattered by the wind.
"Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked...but whose delight is in the law of the Lord." (Psalm 1:1-2)
Psalm 2 emphasizes the importance of submitting to God’s royal Son, foreshadowing Christ.
"Submit to God’s royal son...But what joy for all who take refuge in him!" (Psalm 2:12)
Psalm 10: A Cry for Justice
Psalm 10 is a lament at the seeming prosperity of the wicked but expresses ultimate confidence in God’s judgments. The psalmist pleads for God to punish the wicked and protect the innocent, knowing that God sees and knows all.
"Why, Lord, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?" (Psalm 10:1)
Psalm 33: Praise for God’s Sovereignty
Psalm 33 is a joyful song of praise and trust in God’s sovereignty and faithfulness. The psalmist celebrates God’s creative power and His control over nature, urging all the earth to fear and reverence the Lord.
"The Lord merely spoke, and the heavens were created. He breathed the word, and all the stars were born." (Psalm 33:6)
Psalm 71: A Prayer for Protection
Psalm 71 is a heartfelt prayer of a faithful servant seeking God’s protection and deliverance. The psalmist recounts God’s faithfulness throughout their life, expressing unwavering faith in God’s righteousness and steadfast love.
"In you, Lord, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame." (Psalm 71:1)
Psalm 91: Assurance of God’s Protection
Psalm 91 is a powerful declaration of God’s protection and provision for those who trust Him. It describes the safety and refuge found in the shelter of the Almighty, assuring that no harm will overcome those who trust in God.
"Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty." (Psalm 91:1)

Embracing God’s Protection
As I reflect on these Psalms, the theme of protection stands out vividly. Each psalm emphasizes seeking refuge and finding safety in God. Whether it is protection from the wicked (Psalms 1-2, 10), protection of the righteous (Psalm 33), protection and deliverance from adversaries (Psalm 71), or the overall theme of God’s protective care (Psalm 91), the concept of protection is central to all these psalms.
Last year, I spent a lot of time in the ICU with dear friends who were going through a tragedy. Witnessing another person’s systems fail, I was amazed that any of us are walking around at all! When I consider the word “Protection,” I think of our Protector. Psalm 33:6 reminds us of God’s power in creation:
"The Lord merely spoke, and the heavens were created. He breathed the word, and all the stars were born."
As God’s children, we have the unwavering protection of our faithful God. Like a loving parent, God surrounds us with His divine shield, safeguarding us from the enemy’s snares. In times of distress, He is our refuge, our fortress of strength. We can trust in His mighty power to shield us from harm and deliver us from evil.
The protection offered to us extends beyond physical safety. It encompasses the preservation of our souls, guarding our hearts from despair and hopelessness. When the world bombards us with fear and doubt, we can rest assured that God’s loving arms are our eternal sanctuary.
Even during life’s storms, we can declare the faithfulness and loving-kindness of our Protector. Last year, while singing praise songs with friends in an ICU unit, their son passed away, yet they still believed in God’s protection. They felt held and cherished in their pain and had hope. Because of Jesus, they knew they would see their son again. Even in their darkest moments, God protected their hearts and minds, fixing them on eternity with Him.
These Psalms reveal profound truths about seeking refuge in God’s protection. Whether facing adversity or celebrating God’s sovereignty, we can always trust in His unfailing care. Let us remember that God watches over us, guiding our steps and offering wisdom in every decision. In life’s storms, we can declare His faithfulness, knowing that He is our ever-present defender.

Psalms 92-97
The Thrill of God’s Presence

"You thrill me, Lord, with all you have done for me! I sing for joy because of what you have done." (Psalm 92:4)
Psalm 93: Exalting God’s Glorious Reign
Psalm 93 is a short but powerful declaration of God’s eternal and unshakable reign. It describes God as robed in splendor and clothed with strength, His throne established from eternity. The psalmist emphasizes that God’s power surpasses even the mighty seas, asserting His supreme authority.
"The Lord reigns, he is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed in majesty and armed with strength." (Psalm 93:1)
Psalm 94: A Plea for Justice
Psalm 94 is a heartfelt plea for justice and deliverance from oppression. The psalmist cries out to God, imploring Him to act against the wicked and support the righteous. Despite the frustration, the psalmist finds solace in God’s unfailing love and ultimate justice.
"I cried out, ‘I am slipping!’ but your unfailing love, O Lord, supported me." (Psalm 94:18)
Psalm 95: A Call to Worship
Psalm 95 is a call to worship and bow down before God, acknowledging Him as the Creator and Shepherd. It reminds us of the importance of praising God and recognizing His greatness. The psalm gives us encouragement to remember God’s past faithfulness and to listen to His voice today.
"Come, let us worship and bow down. Let us kneel before the Lord our maker, for he is our God and we are the people he watches over, the flock under his care." (Psalm 95:6-7)
Psalm 96: Singing a New Song
Psalm 96 is a beautiful psalm of praise, urging us to sing a new song to the Lord. It calls on all nations and creation to worship God, celebrating His marvelous deeds and proclaiming His glory. The psalmist highlights the freshness of our praise, encouraging us to continually celebrate God’s new mercies.
“Sing a new song to the Lord! Let the whole earth sing to the Lord!” (Psalm 96:1)
Psalm 97: Rejoicing in God’s Supremacy
Psalm 97 declares God’s supremacy over all the earth. It speaks of God’s strength and His ability to conquer enemies, portraying Him as a mighty ruler. The psalmist encourages the righteous to rejoice in the Lord and give thanks to His holy name.
"The Lord reigns! Let the earth be glad; let the distant shores rejoice." (Psalm 97:1)
Word of the Day: Thrill
Definition: a sudden feeling of excitement and pleasure.
Embracing the Thrill of God’s Works
As I reflect on these Psalms, particularly Psalm 92:4, the word “thrill” stands out to me. The psalmist expresses an overwhelming excitement and joy in the Lord’s works:
"You thrill me, Lord, with all you have done for me! I sing for joy because of what you have done." (Psalm 92:4)
What has God done for you that thrills you? When I think of the word “thrill,” I am reminded of the Wise Men who were thrilled and excited to see the star announcing Jesus’ birth:
"And the star they had seen in the east went on ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. They were thrilled and excited to see the star." (Matthew 2:9-10)
The excitement comes when we fully grasp all that God has done and is doing. This is what our daily Bible reading does—it helps us learn from the past, see God at work in the present, and pay attention to the amazing ways He moves in our lives.
These Psalms reveal the joy and excitement we can find in God’s presence. Whether praising Him for His creation, seeking His justice, or rejoicing in His supremacy, we are reminded of the thrill that comes from knowing and worshiping God. Let us continue to celebrate His marvelous deeds and proclaim His glory, finding joy and contentment in His faithful presence.

Embracing Variety in Worship and Creation
Psalm 104:24 says, “O Lord, what a variety of things you have made! In wisdom you have made them all. The earth is full of your creatures.” This verse beautifully encapsulates the theme of our reflection. We will explore how the psalms celebrate the diverse ways we can worship God and how creation itself reflects His marvelous variety.
Psalm 98: Joyful Celebration of God’s Salvation
Psalm 98 is a jubilant call to praise the Lord for His marvelous deeds. The psalmist invites the whole earth to sing a new song to the Lord, making a joyful noise with musical instruments and voices. Here, we see a variety of worship styles, from instrumental music to vocal praise. The sea, rivers, and mountains are personified, adding their own “songs” to this grand symphony of praise.
How can we incorporate a variety of expressions in our worship? Whether it’s singing, playing instruments, or simply raising our voices in joy, let’s embrace the diverse ways we can celebrate God’s goodness.
Psalm 99: Reverent Worship of the Holy King
Psalm 99 shifts the focus to reverence and awe for God’s sovereignty. The psalmist reminds us of God’s exalted position above all nations and His holiness. Historical references to Moses, Aaron, and Samuel highlight the importance of intercession and obedience.

Psalm 100: A Call to Joyful Thanksgiving

Take a moment to go for a walk and observe the variety in God’s creation. Whether it’s the trees, flowers, clouds, or people, let this experience deepen your appreciation for God’s creativity.

Embracing Variety in Worship
The psalms depict a range of worship styles—from joyful and exuberant praise to contemplative lamentation. The key is not how we worship; God just wants us to be in His presence. Psalm 104:33 beautifully encapsulates this sentiment: “I will sing to the LORD as long as I live. I will praise my God to my last breath!”
When was the last time you took a walk to behold our God and all of His creation? Walk slow, walk fast, hike, jog, or run—but the point is, look and wonder. Embrace the variety in your worship and daily life, recognizing that every moment is an opportunity to praise God.
As we reflect on today’s Word of the Day, “Variety,” let’s remember that our God is a God of endless creativity and diversity. From the psalms, we learn that there are countless ways to worship and experience His presence. Let’s celebrate this variety in our lives and our worship, continually praising God for His marvelous deeds and His unfailing love.

Our Journey Through the Wilderness

Acknowledge your own shortcomings and sins. Confess them to God, knowing that His mercy and love are ever-present. Let this confession lead you to a deeper relationship with Him.
Word of the Day: Wilderness
Definition: an uncultivated, uninhabited, and inhospitable region or a metaphorical place of disfavor or abandonment.
In the Bible, it often represents times of testing and transformation:
- Physical Wilderness: Moses led the Israelites through the wilderness, a place of physical hardship but also divine revelation and guidance.
- Spiritual Wilderness: Joseph’s character was tested in the wilderness of his life’s difficulties, preparing him for greater responsibilities and wisdom.
- Personal Wilderness: Our own wilderness experiences can be times of growth and preparation. God tests and refines us, making us vessels of wisdom and instruments of transformation and encouragement for others.
Personal Takeaway
Consider your own wilderness experiences. How have they tested and strengthened you? Reflect on Psalm 66:10, “You have tested us, O God; you have purified us like silver.” Allow these experiences to prepare you for greater purposes and to inspire others.
Let’s remember that our wilderness journeys are not in vain. They are times of testing, growth, and preparation for greater responsibilities and blessings. Just as Joseph’s story inspires us, our wilderness experiences can also inspire and encourage others.
