No Bones About It

Dwayne Oswald and Julie find old bones in a cave, and they pique the interest of Bart Rathbone, who is convinced they are the bones of Bigfoot.

Chris: Hi, this is Chris. Welcome to Adventures in Odyssey.
John Avery Whittaker (Whit): Oh, hi there. Welcome to Odyssey. I'm John Avery Whittaker, but most folks around here call me Whit. Why don't you get the whole family together and join us for another exciting adventure in Odyssey.
Dwayne Thomas: What is it?
Julie Thomas: Right there, on the ground. Do you see it?
Dwayne Thomas: Rat.
Julie Thomas: This is really creepy.
Bart Rathbone: You brought one back?
Julie Thomas: Yeah, see?
Dwayne Thomas: It's just a little one.
Bart Rathbone: I'll give you $2,000 for it.
Dwayne Thomas: Maybe we should write a song about this experience.
Julie Thomas: It's taking us a lot longer to get back than it did to get out here.
Dwayne Thomas: Yeah. Sure seems like it, doesn't it? Let's pretend for a second that I don't know where we are.
Julie Thomas: Are we lost?
Dwayne Thomas: I didn't say that. We're just pretending. So if I didn't know where we were, would you know where we were?
Julie Thomas: No.
Dwayne Thomas: Okay. Then we're lost.
Julie Thomas: Why did I ever start following you? I know better.
Dwayne Thomas: Well, what is it? Why are you stopping?
Julie Thomas: Look, a cave.
Dwayne Thomas: We better get out of here.
Julie Thomas: Why?
Dwayne Thomas: Because whatever lives there might come out and get its mail.
Julie Thomas: I'm going in.
Dwayne Thomas: What?
Julie Thomas: Come on, let's go.
Dwayne Thomas: Are you crazy? Come back here. Dwayne, don't do that. I Hey, there's the road, right over there.
Julie Thomas: Yeah.
Dwayne Thomas: Well, come on, let's go.
Julie Thomas: Right after I explore this cave.
Dwayne Thomas: Dwayne.
Julie Thomas: It's dark.
Dwayne Thomas: Oh, that's too bad. Guess we got to go home now.
Julie Thomas: Wait, I've got a flashlight keychain.
Dwayne Thomas: You would.
Julie Thomas: Looks empty. Let's keep going.
Dwayne Thomas: You're nuts. You're absolutely
Julie Thomas: What is it?
Dwayne Thomas: Right there, on the ground. Do you see it?
Julie Thomas: Are they human?
Dwayne Thomas: I I can't tell.
Julie Thomas: They are human.
Dwayne Thomas: But the bones are huge.
Julie Thomas: Maybe they're from a dinosaur.
Dwayne Thomas: Or Have you ever heard of Bigfoot?
Julie Thomas: Oh, come on. They can't be.
Dwayne Thomas: What if they are? This would be a major discovery. The bones of Bigfoot.
Julie Thomas: This is really creepy. Let's get out of here.
Dwayne Thomas: Hang on.
Julie Thomas: Don't touch them.
Dwayne Thomas: I'm just getting a little souvenir.
Julie Thomas: Ew, gross.
Dwayne Thomas: Listen, Julie, we can't tell anybody about this. Nobody at all, understand?
Julie Thomas: Why not?
Dwayne Thomas: Cuz then we might have to share our fortune.
Julie Thomas: What fortune?
Dwayne Thomas: Haven't you been listening? Do you know how much a museum would pay for the bones of Bigfoot? Thousands. Maybe millions. These bones could make us rich.
Julie Thomas: Really?
Dwayne Thomas: Yes. So you can't tell anyone, got it?
Julie Thomas: Well, all right. I guess.
Dwayne Thomas: Won't tell anybody about what?
Julie Thomas: Rodney.
Chris: Now on the Adventures in Odyssey Club, Connie has a new initiative as manager of Wits End.
Connie Kendall: I've decided that I'd like to hear from the people, the customers.
Guest (Female): So you're putting out a suggestion box.
Chris: But Penny notices something about the suggestions they find inside.
Connie Kendall: So this person is
Penny Wise: Exactly like me. Do you know what this means?
Connie Kendall: What?
Penny Wise: I have to find this person.
Chris: Follow Penny's search for herself now on the Adventures in Odyssey Club.
Dwayne Thomas: Well, come on, speak up. You guys won't tell anyone about what?
Julie Thomas: Nothing. It's uh not important.
Dwayne Thomas: What are you doing here, Rodney?
Julie Thomas: Oh, I was just looking for the bones.
Dwayne Thomas: I knew it.
Julie Thomas: I knew it. You heard, didn't you?
Dwayne Thomas: Heard what?
Julie Thomas: About the bones.
Dwayne Thomas: What bones?
Julie Thomas: These bones.
Dwayne Thomas: Cool bones.
Julie Thomas: We found them first, Rodney.
Dwayne Thomas: Yeah, so we get the fortune.
Julie Thomas: Julie.
Dwayne Thomas: Fortune? What fortune?
Julie Thomas: You had to mention the fortune.
Dwayne Thomas: Well, he already saw the bones.
Julie Thomas: But he didn't know they were Bigfoots.
Dwayne Thomas: Bigfoot?
Julie Thomas: Dwayne.
Dwayne Thomas: Rats.
Julie Thomas: Look, Rodney, we still saw them first.
Dwayne Thomas: Yeah, there are some and you can't have them. Fine with me.
Julie Thomas: Oh, yeah? Well, you have to get through
Dwayne Thomas: What?
Julie Thomas: I said fine with me.
Dwayne Thomas: You mean you don't want them? Want what? The bones of Bigfoot? Ha. You got to be kidding. Even I don't believe in that stuff.
Julie Thomas: But you said you were looking for the bones.
Dwayne Thomas: Oh, you didn't let me finish. I'm looking for a new place for the bones secret hideout. The bones of rat, not Bigfoot. I thought this cave would work, but since you two twerps know about it, I can see I'm going to have to keep looking.
Julie Thomas: And you really don't care about these bones?
Dwayne Thomas: Yeah, right. What do you think I am, dumb or something? Look, dweebs, you got to be a real dope to believe in Bigfoot. Bigfoot? Really? Where? In a cave.
Bart Rathbone: Cave, cave, what cave?
Dwayne Thomas: One up there to the left, Pop. Those nerds Dwayne and Julie were trying to hide them. I might be interested in a bunch of stupid Hey, why did you turn out the light?
Bart Rathbone: Take me there.
Dwayne Thomas: Where?
Bart Rathbone: The cave.
Dwayne Thomas: What?
Bart Rathbone: Right now.
Dwayne Thomas: But what about the store?
Bart Rathbone: Never mind the store. We closed. Now take me to the bones of Bigfoot. Move it, move it.
Dwayne Thomas: Okay, okay.
Bart Rathbone: And don't call me Pop.
Dwayne Thomas: Okay, Pop. Oh, yeah. This This is incredible. Incredible. The bones of Bigfoot.
Julie Thomas: Wait a minute, Pop. You actually believe this?
Dwayne Thomas: Of course I believe it.
Julie Thomas: But why?
Dwayne Thomas: Well, for one thing, we got the proof laying right here in front of us.
Julie Thomas: But how can you be sure these are the bones of Bigfoot?
Dwayne Thomas: Because I saw him once.
Julie Thomas: What?
Dwayne Thomas: You heard me. It was It was right around this area, too. I was just a kid. Must have been 30 years ago now. I was I was wandering around, goofing off, when suddenly I heard a noise. I thought it was a bear, so I climbed a tree. And that's That's when I saw him.
Julie Thomas: Really, Pop? What he look like?
Dwayne Thomas: Just like the pictures you've seen. Same big hulking body, same hairy fur coat, same skateboard and straw hat.
Julie Thomas: Wow. Skateboard and straw hat?
Dwayne Thomas: I know, I know. Nobody believed me back then either. That's why I finally clammed up about it. I've kept it to myself ever since.
Julie Thomas: Whatever you say, Pop.
Dwayne Thomas: I'm telling you, it was true, true.
Julie Thomas: I believe you. I believe you.
Dwayne Thomas: And now now before it's right here on the ground, here is the proof. Yeah.
Julie Thomas: So what do we do about it?
Dwayne Thomas: Do? Have I ever taught you nothing? We got Bigfoot's bones right here. Something people will pay to see.
Julie Thomas: Oh, yeah.
Dwayne Thomas: Yeah. And if I play my cards right, this is going to make a nice, profitable little attraction.
Julie Thomas: Wait a minute. What about Dwayne and Julie?
Dwayne Thomas: You want a Well, technically they found the bones first. They'll probably want a piece of the action. I could scare them into silence if you know what I mean.
Bart Rathbone: No, no, no, no. We're not going to do anything like that. This time we are going to use our heads. You stay here, make sure nobody steals the bones.
Julie Thomas: Where are you going?
Bart Rathbone: City Hall.
Julie Thomas: What for?
Bart Rathbone: I 'm going to find out who owns this land.
Chris: So in essence, since the imagination station now allows someone to enter into a Bible story as any character, why couldn't they also enter into a story as something other than a person?
Eugene Meltsner: Uh you mean like an animal?
Chris: Precisely. For instance, you could be a a a a giraffe in Noah's Ark.
Eugene Meltsner: Oh, well, that would be quite an experience.
Chris: It's a simple matter of programming, which I've already taken the liberty of starting. Uh we'd replace the human character code with an animal character code.
Julie Thomas: Hi, Mr. Whittaker.
Dwayne Thomas: Hi, Eugene.
Eugene Meltsner: Oh, hi, Dwayne and Julie. Greetings.
Chris: Well, what have you two been up to?
Dwayne Thomas: Oh, nothing much.
Julie Thomas: We found Bigfoot.
Dwayne Thomas: Julie.
Julie Thomas: Well, he practically dragged it out of me.
Eugene Meltsner: You saw Bigfoot?
Dwayne Thomas: Not exactly, but we have proof that he exists.
Eugene Meltsner: Proof?
Julie Thomas: We saw his skeleton.
Eugene Meltsner: Oh, really? Uh fascinating.
Julie Thomas: It's no joke. It was just like the human skeleton in my biology class, but it was a lot bigger.
Dwayne Thomas: The bones in the feet were gigantic.
Julie Thomas: Show him the bone, Dwayne.
Eugene Meltsner: You brought one back?
Julie Thomas: Yeah, see?
Dwayne Thomas: I'll text you.
Eugene Meltsner: Yeah, it certainly is.
Dwayne Thomas: It's a toe bone.
Eugene Meltsner: Well, what do you think, Eugene?
Chris: Difficult to say. It has a certain verisimilitude, but the best thing to do would be to run some tests on it in the lab at the college to verify its authenticity.
Eugene Meltsner: Yeah, I agree.
Dwayne Thomas: Wait a minute. What does that all mean?
Eugene Meltsner: Oh, Eugene's going to find out if the bone is real.
Dwayne Thomas: Oh, it's real all right.
Eugene Meltsner: Well, that's what the test will show.
Dwayne Thomas: Then what?
Eugene Meltsner: Then I think we should take a look at the rest of that skeleton, if it's all right with you, Dwayne.
Dwayne Thomas: Sure.
Bart Rathbone: Yes.
Bart Rathbone: Oh, uh you Eckhardt, Jeb Eckhardt.
Bart Rathbone: Yes, how can I help?
Bart Rathbone: I'm Bart Rathbone. I talked to you on the phone about the property.
Bart Rathbone: Oh, yes. You wanted to buy it, didn't you?
Bart Rathbone: Yeah, yes, I did. Yeah.
Bart Rathbone: Well, as I told you over the phone, Mr. Rathbone, I'm afraid it's not for sale.
Bart Rathbone: But you didn't give me a chance to make you an offer.
Bart Rathbone: Oh, I'm not sure any offer would mean anything. That land has well, sentimental value.
Bart Rathbone: I'll give you $2,000 for it.
Bart Rathbone: My grandfather planted an oak tree on that land 120 years ago. Now it's the highest in the whole forest.
Bart Rathbone: $5,000.
Bart Rathbone: My great great grandmother wrestled a grizzly bear on the northeast corner of that land, had a tiny scar on her right cheek and a bear skin rug to show for it.
Bart Rathbone: $6,000.
Bart Rathbone: I tell you what, son. You You seem like an honest man who just wants a good plot of land to maybe to build a nice house, raise a family, wrestle a bear or two. And if there's one thing my grandfather taught me, it was generosity. So Mr. Rathbone, I'll give you that land for $10,000.
Bart Rathbone: $10,000?
Bart Rathbone: Don't think I could part with it for any less.
Bart Rathbone: Well, I yeah. I'll have to raise ticket prices.
Bart Rathbone: What was that?
Bart Rathbone: Uh the old okay, okay. I'll take it.
Bart Rathbone: Fine doing business with you.
Bart Rathbone: Same here.
Bart Rathbone: You take care of that land, okay?
Bart Rathbone: Oh, I will. Uh I 'll talk to you later. You know about the papers and stuff.
Bart Rathbone: Oh, sure thing. We'll see you.
Bart Rathbone: Uh yeah. See you.
Bart Rathbone: $10,000. What a steal.
Bart Rathbone: I just unloaded that piece of property out by Trickle Lake for $10,000.
Julie Thomas: So how much do you think a museum would pay for a Bigfoot skeleton?
Dwayne Thomas: Would you stop thinking about that?
Julie Thomas: You don't get it.
Dwayne Thomas: Do you, Julie? This is huge. This is like the biggest thing to ever hit Odyssey, right, Mr. Whittaker?
Eugene Meltsner: Well, if they are the bones of Bigfoot, then it would be a significant find, yeah.
Dwayne Thomas: Yeah, and I bet they'll be worth a lot of money, maybe even a million dollars.
Julie Thomas: And what would you do with a million dollars?
Dwayne Thomas: Get a drum set, a couple of cars, probably buy my own music studio.
Julie Thomas: If only you could buy talent.
Dwayne Thomas: You'll be eating those words when I play at the Connelsville Concert Hall at 20 bucks a ticket.
Julie Thomas: I wouldn't pay 20 bucks to hear you sing if there was a trip to Wally World included.
Dwayne Thomas: You better be careful or I won't share any of it with you.
Eugene Meltsner: Well, I wouldn't start counting my millions just yet, Dwayne.
Dwayne Thomas: Why not? When the test proves that the skeleton is real, it will be worth a lot of money, don't it?
Eugene Meltsner: Probably.
Dwayne Thomas: See, Julie.
Eugene Meltsner: But that doesn't necessarily mean you'll get any of it.
Dwayne Thomas: What? Why not?
Eugene Meltsner: Because you just found the bones, Dwayne. They actually belong to the person who owns the land.
Dwayne Thomas: Right.
Bart Rathbone: And that person would be me.
Dwayne Thomas: Yeah.
Bart Rathbone: Bart.
Julie Thomas: Rodney.
Dwayne Thomas: What are you doing here?
Bart Rathbone: Oh, just protecting my investment.
Eugene Meltsner: What investment?
Bart Rathbone: The bones of Bigfoot. What else?
Dwayne Thomas: What? You told them, Rodney?
Bart Rathbone: Yep.
Julie Thomas: But I thought you didn't believe in Bigfoot.
Dwayne Thomas: You said that anybody who does would have to be a real dope.
Bart Rathbone: You did?
Dwayne Thomas: Oh, yeah. Well, that was before I talked to my Pop. He showed me how wrong I was cuz he actually saw Bigfoot once.
Bart Rathbone: He did?
Dwayne Thomas: Yeah, I did. It was about 30 years ago. He looked just like the pictures you've seen. Same big hulking body, same hairy fur coat, same skateboard and straw hat.
Eugene Meltsner: Skateboard and straw hat?
Dwayne Thomas: Oh, never mind that. The point is I just bought this land from old man Eckhardt. Paid him $10,000.
Eugene Meltsner: $10,000? Where'd you get that kind of money, Bart?
Dwayne Thomas: First National Bank of Odyssey at Prime plus 17% interest, which means this cave and the bones in it now belong to me.
Bart Rathbone: But that's not fair.
Dwayne Thomas: Who said life was fair, kid?
Eugene Meltsner: Bart, are you sure that was a wise move? You don't even know if these bones are genuine.
Dwayne Thomas: Oh, they're genuine all right.
Eugene Meltsner: Well, would you mind if we took a look at
Dwayne Thomas: Oh, not at all. Look to your heart's content, right after you give me $10.
Julie Thomas: $10?
Bart Rathbone: A piece.
Julie Thomas: What?
Eugene Meltsner: Oh, Bart.
Dwayne Thomas: Too little?
Julie Thomas: You can't do this, Connie, Mr. Whittaker.
Eugene Meltsner: Well, I'm afraid he can, Dwayne.
Dwayne Thomas: That's right. Like I said, it's my property. So if you have your $10 ready
Eugene Meltsner: Forget it, Bart.
Dwayne Thomas: Then I'm afraid I'll have to ask these all to leave.
Eugene Meltsner: All right, come on, kids.
Julie Thomas: Mr. Whittaker.
Dwayne Thomas: Oh, man.
Julie Thomas: So long, dweebs.
Dwayne Thomas: Uh come again for our grand opening. Oh, and be sure to tell all your friends.
Eugene Meltsner: Skateboard and straw hat.
Chris: Want to contact us about the episodes you're hearing? Visit our website at adventuresinodyssey.com or talk to someone at Focus on the Family. Call 1-800-A-FAMILY with a parent's permission, of course. We always love hearing from you.
Eugene Meltsner: So you're saying the bones are intact?
Dwayne Thomas: No, they're in the cave.
Eugene Meltsner: It looks like you've attracted quite a crowd.
Dwayne Thomas: Well, what did you expect? This ain't some kind of circus sideshow. These are the bones of Bigfoot.
Eugene Meltsner: You know, this could attract people from all over the globe, Bart. Are you prepared for the inundation of tourists?
Dwayne Thomas: I am always prepared for one of them incundation dation things, whatever.
Eugene Meltsner: So what kind of proof do you have that these are Bigfoot's bones?
Dwayne Thomas: Proof? Proof? I'll tell you what proof I've got. I got the bones right there. You have all the proof you need just as soon as we open the gate.
Eugene Meltsner: Uh speaking of which weren't you supposed to open up 10 minutes ago?
Dwayne Thomas: Uh yeah, yeah, but we're having a few technical difficulties, but we should have them cleared up in just a few minutes.
Julie Thomas: Look out, gangway, coming through.
Dwayne Thomas: Rodney, Rodney, get in here.
Julie Thomas: Hi you, Pop.
Dwayne Thomas: Excuse us, guys. Uh we'll be opening in just a few minutes, folks.
Bart Rathbone: What took you so long?
Julie Thomas: I couldn't get through the traffic.
Bart Rathbone: Did you bring the bulbs?
Julie Thomas: Right here.
Bart Rathbone: Good. There's the stepladder. Now get to it.
Julie Thomas: Right, Pop.
Bart Rathbone: Fine time for my bulbs to burn out. I got 1,000 people lined up to see this cave and I got nobody.
Dwayne Thomas: Be careful, Rodney.
Bart Rathbone: Oh, don't worry, Pop. I'm in control. Rodney, what are you doing?
Julie Thomas: Oh, the ladder slipped. I'm all right by the way.
Bart Rathbone: Oh, never mind that. You fell right on the Oh, no. You broke one of the bones.
Julie Thomas: What?
Bart Rathbone: You broke it right in half.
Julie Thomas: Oh, man.
Bart Rathbone: Don't pick it up. I was just seeing if I could fix it. Hey, wait a minute.
Julie Thomas: What? What is it? This ain't a bone.
Bart Rathbone: What? What are you talking about?
Dwayne Thomas: Look it. It's all crumbly like uh like plaster or something. Let me see that. Oh. You're right. It is plaster and and it's got a wire mesh under it.
Julie Thomas: Uh I don't get it. What's it mean?
Dwayne Thomas: It it it it means it's a fake bone.
Julie Thomas: Fake?
Dwayne Thomas: Not so loud, you corked brain. Sorry, Pop. But this is some joke.
Bart Rathbone: No, no, it ain't. This this is This is really bad, really really bad. Oh, that's what it is. And I got an incundation incundation. I got a lot of people out there.
Dwayne Thomas: Well, maybe we could put this back down like this and see? Nobody will notice.
Bart Rathbone: They'll notice. They'll notice. Oh, this is terrible. What am I going to do? What am I going to do? Oh, quiet.
Eugene Meltsner: Well, hi you two.
Julie Thomas: Hi, Mr. Whittaker.
Eugene Meltsner: Oh, I thought you'd both be at the grand opening of the Bigfoot exhibit.
Dwayne Thomas: Are you kidding? I never want to see that cave again for as long as I live.
Julie Thomas: He's been like this all morning.
Eugene Meltsner: Oh, well, sorry, Dwayne.
Dwayne Thomas: I was so close. Millions slipped right through my fingers. Maybe we should write a song about this experience. The bones of broken dreams.
Eugene Meltsner: Well, how about a nice ice cream sundae to cheer you up?
Julie Thomas: Thanks, but I don't have any money.
Dwayne Thomas: A skeleton of shattered hopes.
Bart Rathbone: Found the house.
Julie Thomas: Double chocolate for me.
Dwayne Thomas: Me, too. Thanks, Mr. Whittaker.
Eugene Meltsner: Okay, coming right up. Oh, hi, Eugene. Hello, Mr. Whittaker. Exactly the intrepid threesome I need to see. I've just come from the lab and I have the test results on the bone you gave me.
Julie Thomas: Really?
Dwayne Thomas: Wow.
Eugene Meltsner: Did you find out anything? As a matter of fact, we found something rather extraordinary.
Dwayne Thomas: What?
Eugene Meltsner: It has to do with the origin of the bone. It actually came from
Julie Thomas: Bigfoot? A dinosaur?
Eugene Meltsner: A craft shop. What? Simply put, it's artificial, man-made, plaster de Paris, I believe.
Bart Rathbone: You mean
Dwayne Thomas: It's a fake? They're all fake?
Eugene Meltsner: As a counterfeit bill, to borrow the colloquialism.
Julie Thomas: Why would somebody make a fake skeleton?
Eugene Meltsner: Precisely the question I've been asking myself, though not literally, of course.
Dwayne Thomas: Somebody was trying to trick us.
Eugene Meltsner: Well, pretty elaborate joke. Hm.
Dwayne Thomas: How would they put it way out in the middle of the woods? Who are they trying to fool?
Eugene Meltsner: Well, you for one. And I think they did a pretty good job of it.
Dwayne Thomas: What do you mean?
Eugene Meltsner: Well, you wanted the bones to be something extraordinary. So in your mind, you made them real, didn't you?
Dwayne Thomas: Well, yeah, I guess I did.
Eugene Meltsner: All you could think of was the money you were going to make and the things you were going to buy. And you weren't the only one. Mr. Rathbone also fell sway to the bones persuasion.
Julie Thomas: Hey, you think he knows?
Eugene Meltsner: Listen.
John Cameron: This is John Cameron coming to you live from Bigfoot Cave near Trickle Lake where owner Bart Rathbone has just made a startling discovery.
Bart Rathbone: They're gone. They've been stolen. The Bigfoot bones have been stolen.
Julie Thomas: He knows.
Bart Rathbone: I pulled a sheet over the bones last night to protect them and now when I lifted the sheet, they were gone. Please stay behind the gate. There's nothing to see anymore, people.
John Cameron: And there you have it. The Bigfoot bones gone. We'll bring you updates as
Eugene Meltsner: Unbelievable. Unbelievable. Well, you see what happens when greed takes over your life.
Dwayne Thomas: You know, this whole thing would make a great rock video.
Eugene Meltsner: Video? Video? Of course. That's it.
Julie Thomas: What's it, Mr. Whittaker?
Eugene Meltsner: I think I know where the Bigfoot bones came from.
Julie Thomas: You do?
Eugene Meltsner: Yes. And if I'm right, it would also explain what Bart Rathbone actually saw all those years ago. Watch the shop, Eugene. I need to do a little research.
John Cameron: Yes, sir.
John Avery Whittaker (Whit): Oh, hi there, Bart.
Bart Rathbone: Whittaker. What are you doing here?
John Avery Whittaker (Whit): Oh, I hadn't seen you in a couple of days, ever since the mysterious disappearance of the Bigfoot bones.
Bart Rathbone: Oh, yeah, yeah, tragic, wasn't it? So uh can I interest you in a clock radio?
John Avery Whittaker (Whit): Well, actually I'd like to take a look at a VCR.
Bart Rathbone: Certainly, certainly. We have a fine model right over here on aisle five.
John Avery Whittaker (Whit): Uh may I play this tape?
Bart Rathbone: You brought your own tape?
John Avery Whittaker (Whit): Oh, just something I picked up recently. I wanted you to see it.
Bart Rathbone: Oh, well, uh all right.
John Avery Whittaker (Whit): There, this scene right here.
Bart Rathbone: Uh yeah, the woods. So what?
John Avery Whittaker (Whit): Oh, wait, wait. There. It's Bigfoot.
Eugene Meltsner: Yes, riding a skateboard and wearing a straw hat.
Bart Rathbone: Where'd you get this tape?
John Avery Whittaker (Whit): From a video catalog. Uh it's a movie called The Legend of Bigfoot's Cave. It was filmed right here in Odyssey about 30 years ago. I remember hearing about it. That's the Bigfoot you saw, Bart, a man in a costume.
Bart Rathbone: Wow. What do you know?
John Avery Whittaker (Whit): Oh, there's more. Uh see that cave there?
Bart Rathbone: Uh sure.
John Avery Whittaker (Whit): Oh, wait, wait. Until the the camera goes inside there. There. Do you see anything familiar?
Bart Rathbone: Oh. My bones. Dweebs, my bones.
John Avery Whittaker (Whit): Yes.
Bart Rathbone: No, wait a minute. Then that means
John Avery Whittaker (Whit): That means those bones were props for a movie. Fake.
Bart Rathbone: Fake? Well, then I guess it's a good thing I never charged anybody to go into that cave, huh?
John Avery Whittaker (Whit): Yeah, you might even say your little burglary was a blessing in disguise.
Bart Rathbone: Fake. Can you believe them Hollywood people cluttering up our forest with a bunch of plaster bones? That's who we ought to sic the police on.
John Avery Whittaker (Whit): Plaster. How did you know the bones were made out of plaster, Bart?
Bart Rathbone: What? Hm? Uh uh because you said they were.
John Avery Whittaker (Whit): I never said anything about plaster, just that they were fake.
Bart Rathbone: Uh Well, Bart. Well, uh oh. All right, Whittaker, all right.
John Avery Whittaker (Whit): How long have you known?
Bart Rathbone: Well, I found out just before the grand opening.
John Avery Whittaker (Whit): You know, for someone who has just lost a potential fortune, you sure are taking it well, especially considering the money you spent on that land.
Bart Rathbone: Huh? Oh, well, you know, easy come, easy go.
John Avery Whittaker (Whit): Yeah, now I know something's happened. Come on, Bart. Out with it.
Bart Rathbone: Uh well, if you must know, a couple of days ago, old man Eckhardt came to see me. He said he'd made a mistake selling me the land and wondered if I'd consider selling it back to him.
John Avery Whittaker (Whit): Let me guess. You were only too happy to accommodate him uh for a small profit.
Bart Rathbone: Hey, he insisted.
John Avery Whittaker (Whit): Uh-huh. Well, I'll say this for you, Bart. You certainly are consistent.
Bart Rathbone: Well, thanks, I think.
John Avery Whittaker (Whit): Oh, say, isn't that Mr. Eckhardt on television?
Bart Rathbone: Yeah, yeah, we ought to turn it up.
John Cameron: What happened?
Jeb Eckhardt: Well, I'm just a poor mountaineer, you know. I can barely keep my family fed, but then yesterday I was shooting at some food and up from the ground comes this bubbling crude.
John Cameron: Oil, you mean.
Jeb Eckhardt: Yep, black gold, Texas tea. Well, the first thing you know, old Jeb's millionaire.
Bart Rathbone: What?
John Cameron: Mr. Eckhardt's not exaggerating, folks. Experts say this could be one of the richest oil finds in the state.
John Avery Whittaker (Whit): Bart, he didn't find that oil on the land you sold back to him, did he?
Bart Rathbone: Bones. Oil. Oh.
John Avery Whittaker (Whit): Oh, I guess he did. Oh, Bart.
Chris: Whit said Dwayne and Bart were taken in by the fake bones because of their greed. Dwayne dreamed of getting musical equipment. Bart dreamed of great wealth, and both of them ended up the worse off. That's what happens when we let sin like the love of riches get the best of us. We become blind to the truth. The Apostle Paul said it best in 1 Timothy 6:10. Love of money is the root of all evil. And that's it for now, except to say that if you'd like to write to us, we'd love to hear from you. Our address is Adventures in Odyssey, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80995 or in Canada write to Box 9800, Vancouver, BC V6B 4G3. And when you do, ask about how you can get your own copy of today's episode. It's called No Bones About It. Adventures in Odyssey is a presentation of Focus on the Family. No Bones About It was written by Wayne Valero, Marshall Younger, and Phil Lollar, and directed by Phil Lollar. Our production engineer was Todd Busteed, and I'm Chris, hoping you'll join us again next time for more Adventures in Odyssey.

No matter who you are, what you’re going through or what challenges your family may be facing, we’re here to help. With practical resources — like our 1-800 Family Help line, counseling and websites — we’re committed to providing trustworthy, biblical guidance and support.
