As we cross the mid-August threshold, summer’s wind-down seems to gasp for just one more memory or two.

We’re going to try to help.

This week in That Passport Life, we’re suggesting two late-August escapes that couldn’t be farther apart geographically, yet share a wonderful ability to make the clock slow down.

First, Slovenia—from the almost-too-beautiful-to-be-real waters of Lake Bled to the vineyards and villages of Goriška Brda. Then we come home to Mackinac Island, where horses, bicycles, fudge and one of America’s grandest hotels remind us that sometimes the best vacation upgrade is simply slowing down.

Our taste buds are still game for some final summer flavor as well, and Café Boulud delivers. An extraordinary evening, remarkable food and the kind of relaxed setting that allows dinner and conversation to stretch deliciously into the night.
